CPSA 2017 Short Course

Event Date 03/Aug/2017

CPSA is pleased to announce its short course offering for 2017. Join us August 3-4, 2017 in Charleston, West Virginia, for Coal Prep 101—CPSA’s most popular short course designed exclusively for coal prep operators and plant managers.

The 2-day course is designed to provide the maximum level of information while saving both time and money for its participants. The workshop provides background information that describes (i) why coal preparation is necessary, (ii) methods for determining coal cleanability, and (iii) what types of plant layouts are required. Specific topics to be covered in the workshops include sizing operations (screens, sieves and classifying cyclones), cleaning operations (dense medium separators, water-based separators, and froth flotation), and dewatering operations (centrifugal dryers, screenbowl centrifuges, vacuum filters, belt presses, and thickeners).

The course will be held in the Captiol Room of the Holiday Inn & Suites South, Charleston, West Virginia. Located at the Charleston Conference Center, the Holiday Inn & Suites Charleston West provides guests with everything needed for a quality event. Its new indoor recreation complex provides hotel guests with a luxurious indoor pool and hot tub, state-of-the-art fitness center and sundeck with outdoor fireplace and grill. Our restaurant and lounge is a relaxing choice after a day of work or play and be sure to catch our Comedy Zone comedy club each weekend for on-site entertainment.

The course will be given by CPSA veteran instructors Gerald (Jerry) H. Luttrell and Rick Q. Honaker. Luttrell is the E. Morgan Massey Professor of Mining and Minerals Engineering at Virginia Tech. He received his B.S. (1980), M.S. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in mining and minerals engineering from Virginia Tech. His expertise lies in the areas of separation technologies for the mineral and coal industries as well as pioneering new fields of technology in the environmentally clean processing of mined materials. Honaker is professor and chair of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky (UK). He received his B.S. (1986), M.S. (1988) and Ph.D. (1992) degrees in mining and minerals engineering from Virginia Tech. Honaker has developed an extensive research program in coal and mineral processing with an emphasis in fine particle separation processes, and he has conducted workshops for industrial professionals and served as an invited lecturer for international seminars in India, China, Columbia, Turkey, Canada and Australia.
